Project Day

Well, today is project day. I have carpet layers coming in this morning. I thought this day would NEVER come. Whew! We're finally at this stage of the project. We live in a pretty modest sized house - especially for our area. When we moved to this area (where the houses are priced MUCH HIGHER than where we used to live...), we bought itty bitty...with an unfinished basement. That way, Mike could have a workshop and he could build an additional bathroom, bedroom and family room downstairs - along with a storage room. You know - in his spare time.

Where is this spare time of which I speak?

Good question. That's what the carpet people were asking ever since last spring, when we ordered carpeting, thinking we'd have them install it, as soon as we got to that point of our remodeling project - surely it couldn't take that long! After all the walls were up, wiring and plumbing was done. We just needed to paint, put up the framework for the ceiling and do trimwork.

Well, the carpeting people have been calling for months now. They've been eagerly waiting to install...and be paid the balance of what we owe. :)

Well, today's the day! Yipee for everybody!

This will be Aaron's new room. We painted the walls a nice mossy green. Mike's going to put an oak varnished shelf on top, where the phone and electronics are sitting right now.

Aaron will have two big closet oak doors. (We had to take them off for the carpet layers.) His bedroom doors have the handles that you push down on. Right outside his room, if you take a right, Mike built a bathroom with in-floor heat and natural stone floors and a walk-in shower. We're now calling Aaron "King-Tut", because his pad will be the nicest in the house! (I'd show you a picture of the bathroom, but it's piled full of ceiling tile right now, so you wouldn't be able to see anything.)

This is one side of the new living room. Through that pocket door is Mike's workshop. It is now packed full of junk that used to be throughout the basement. That is our next project. Ugh. Isn't the yellow color pretty on these walls? Mike wired this room to be a home theater - should be great. He's insulating the ceiling, so we don't hear too much bass through it. The walls will also be covered in his hunting stuff - this is his "man cave", I guess. He has a bear rug, multiple deer mounts, etc. He really loves that stuff, so I'm glad he'll get a place to put all of it. They each hold dear memories for him - many are hunting times he's had with his dad, who he is very close to.

Mike built this fireplace. Isn't it gorgeous? My hubby does not have a lot of time, but he is just amazing! He is also going to put oak pieces in a zig-zag pattern on the bottom half of the walls (on two of them) and put up an oak piece for a shelf.
Once carpeted, this place is going to be great. And, when we get the ceiling up, all we'll need is the doors, and then the oak on the walls and shelves. Furniture, of course is the next thing.
Oh, and when I say "we" are doing these things, I hope you know I mean Mike, right? My part is to make sure he's fed and hydrated. And to keep things running smoothly upstairs. :) I help pick out colors, too. And furniture.
The carpet layers are late. Well, I guess I can extend them some grace, after making THEM wait since last spring...
