Monday Miscellany

The big excitement in my neck of the woods is, as it often is...

...the weather.

It's our first snow day today of the school year. I don't know what the official total is, but my birdbath is almost completely covered, and our big bush out front is engulfed in snow. They were predicting 12-15 inches, and I'll bet we've got at least that...and it's slated to snow until noon. It's almost 10 and it doesn't look like it's ready to stop.
I don't really mind the snow. If it's going to snow, it should snow big. In December we had that 22" drop of snow, and then last week we had a day that hit 52 degrees that melted most of it...so now we have a place to plow all of this stuff! ;) It's February, so there's only two more solid months of this, and then it will be pretty much gone...so while some people are really fed up and have had their fill, I'm okay with it because I know we're on the back end of the snow. And, besides - getting snowed in is kind of fun! (When else am I going to get my writing done?) ;)

Saturday, the Bixler family had a day full of pure FUN! Mike finished grouting the tile backsplash in the kitchen (WAIT! THAT's not the fun part...we really ARE MORE fun than that!) and then we headed to Minneapolis to see the new Science Museum exhibit.

Yes, we are THOSE people. We are science nerds. My kids LOVE science stuff! We have a membership to the Science Museum. And...the new exhibit is something my kids are OBSESSED WITH...
Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs
You wouldn't believe the HUNDREDS of artifacts they had displayed! Tons of statues and gold items - jewelry, headdresses, gold sandals and these gold finger and toe cots that were placed over his toes and fingers, scepters. They had things from Tut's tomb like a bed, a chair...and then things from other ancient royalty. They had a stone coffin from an ancient prince's cat, they had carvings in rocks, heiroglyphics...just a ton of stuff...it was SO INTERESTING!

Then, we saw an Omnitheater presentation...
Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs was the name of the Omnitheater presentation,  about Forty royal mummies, including 12 Kings of Egypt, that were recovered from a single tomb. They talked about the gathering and study of ancient DNA to prove who King Tut's father was.

Do any of you remember Steve Martin's "King Tut" song that he debuted on SNL? (This won't apply to my younger bloggy buddies, because it's circa 1979)

When we were at the exhibit I tried to explain this skit to my kids (being the "cool parent" that I am). When we came home, I showed them on You Tube. They are such nerds. They looked at me after they saw it and rolled their eyes. Bridgette said, "None of those facts are true. He wasn't born in Arizona!" And Aaron said, "Mom, he wasn't buried with his donkey." Facts??? This wasn't performed by a SCIENTIST! Steve Martin is a COMEDIAN! Get a grip, kids! (Shelly, if you're reading this, this is the SAME KID *Aaron*  who said it was embarrassing eating at Perkins with you and I on Friday...because we laugh too much and are too loud! Must be Mike's genes...this serious stuff...)

After the Science Museum, we headed back to Hudson and grabbed a quick burger and watched my favorite Saturday show...48 Hours Mysteries (after finding "King Tut" on You Tube...priorities, priorities)....and hit the hay.

Yesterday, everyone was buzzing about the "big snow storm!" Everyone in these parts is obsessed with the weather. It always makes big news.

...and that's where we're at today. Snowed in. :) So, I've got my coffee...and my kids...and writing to do. Bridgette is sewing in her room (now that she cleaned it, per her mom's orders) and Aaron has recently braved the elements to meet his buddy across the street. I'm sure they're XBoxing over there.

I need to make cookies for Mike later (he's going ice fishing on Thursday). But, for now, I write...we're nearing the end of the month, so of course I'm cramming in my month's writing quota... :) Same old, same old.

What did you do this weekend?

So do you think I'm setting myself up for disappointment if I think this was the last big snowstorm?? :) I am just kind of ready to be done and get back outside. ONE more month until Spring!

We stayed home all weekend after getting infected with pink eye. Yuck.

Have a great week Pennie!!

You and me, we're two kindred spirits. 48 Hours Mystery is MY favorite Saturday night show!!

The King Tut exhibit sounds awesome!! I think it's really great that your kids enjoy science and family outings, it's sounds like the four of you have a really awesome bond and I really hope my future family can be so close.

I would of loved to of gone to that exhibit! I love stuff like that.

According to the farmers almanac, that has been right so far, we are supposed to have two more snow storms. I think you just got one of them, so one more for you.

Oh COOL. When I was a kid my absolute favorite book in the world was a glossy on King Tut. I begged for the thing and read it until it was a rag.

And Steve Martin is every bit as cool too - absolutely!
