Fall Smells...and Other Autumn Random Thoughts

It smells like fall...
At least that's what Aaron thinks. He just got home from high school and walked into the kitchen. I have Beef Rouladen in gravy simmering on the stove. On the way down to his room, he peeks through the banister.
"Mmmmm...smells good."
Those good fall smells.
Like Beef Rouladen.
Yummy.
I've just spent the day writing with a warm cup of coffee by my side, all the way, and a warm afgan on my lap. More signs of fall.
And the sounds of the dryer and washing machine whirring in the background, providing the cadence for my thoughts to roll around my mind like the clothes in the machine...around and around. More signs of fall - no more clothes flapping in the sunny breeze - the overcast day wouldn't do the trick.
I can't wait to try out those Cake Pops, now - I got my Cookbook - Finally! I need to practice so that I am a Cake Pop Professional come time for our November bake sale! I'm sure they'll be a post about THAT! Remember last year, when I locked my keys in the car at the bank? And Mike was in Utah? And a stranger drove me home? Ugh!
Well, it's time to fold, and finish my Rouladen. Here's a recipe, if you'd like!

Beef Rouladen:
Ingredients

1/4 cup Dijon mustard

8 slices beef top round steak, (1/4 inch thick and about 2 pounds)

Salt and pepper to taste

8 bacon strips

1 large onion, cut into thin wedges

3 tablespoons canola oil

3 cups beef broth

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup water

Chopped fresh parsley, optional

Directions

Lightly spread mustard on each slice of steak; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place 1 bacon strip and a few onion wedges on each slice; roll up; secure with toothpicks.

In a large skillet, brown beef in oil until no longer pink; drain. Add broth; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 1-1/2 hours or until meat is tender.

Remove meat and keep warm. Combine flour and water until smooth; gradually stir into broth. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly until thickened and bubbly. Remove toothpicks. Return to gravy; heat through. Sprinkle with parsley if desired.
Yield: 8 servings.

I do love fall smells and fall cooking. Of course, it is still 90 degrees around here so it is hard to get those fall feelings!

It has felt like fall around here for the past 2 weeks! Actually...more like winter! BLAH. But I love cooking hot meals and then curling up under my nice warm blanket at night to watch some of the new fall TV shows!
