Sixteen years ago today, my boyfriend Mike and I finished up work and our co-workers bid us farewell (we were "going to Mike's grandmother's in Indiana for a visit") for the week.
We drove a few hours north to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and....eloped!!!
We were married by Mike's friend who was a Methodist pastor, in a Lutheran church (his church was being remodeled) and the only ones in attendance were the pastor, his wife and his daughter.
I wore a calf-length dress with lacy granny boots (ooo - I thought I looked SO GREAT!). My hair was long, blonde spiral curls with a comb of flowers and beads hanging down. I made my bouquet from a dozen silk roses I got from a Home Interiors party I went to - and I let the pastor's teenage daughter have it, because she was admiring it - I made her day!
Then, Mike and I spent our first night as husband and wife in a hotel in Michigan. In the morning, we headed back to our little farmhouse in Wausaukee and called our family who met us at the airport before we flew out to Florida for our honeymoon. Poor Mike lugged home our luggage, which was stuffed with about 40 pounds of seashells. (I don't get out much.)
